We are working every day to ensure everyone has the right to a good life.
On December 10th, 1948, the UN adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This document describes 30 fundamental rights that people are entitled to, no matter your age, race, nationality, gender, or sexuality.
Here at Esperança, we are firm believers in basic human rights. We believe everyone deserves healthy food, clean water, education, a home, and healthcare – and we are doing something about it. We are working every day to give people in Bolivia, Nicaragua, Mozambique, Peru, and the United States access to these most basic of human rights.
The theme of this year’s Human Rights Day is poverty. In our line of work, the eradication of poverty is referred to as a “wicked problem” – a problem with not one answer, and seemingly no end.
We have been working on helping the world’s most impoverished communities gain access to healthcare so they can work, better seeds so they can sell more crops, and schooling so their kids can get an education. As limited as our abilities are, for the families that benefit from our services, their world is changed forever.
Breaking the cycle of poverty as a barrier to human rights starts with one person. If you can help one person be healthy enough to work, that is success.
What are you doing to celebrate rights today?
