It is with a heavy heart that I share this message today, and I’m sure it has been on your hearts and minds as well.
Advance stands in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and condemns the military actions directed by Russian leadership during this deeply troubling international crisis.
The board, volunteers, and staff at Advance would like to express our sincerest sympathies to the nation of Ukraine, as the current conflict will have devastating effects on an already fragile health system and put millions of innocent families in harm’s way. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who have been injured, displaced, or impacted by these senseless acts of war.
In the words of the World Health Organization, “The right to health and access to services must always be protected, not least during times of crisis. Health workers, hospitals and other facilities must never be targets and must be allowed to continue to serve the health needs of communities. The protection of civilians is an obligation under international humanitarian law.”
Ensuring the health and safety of all people lies at the core of Advance’s mission, and we are committed to health equity in all situations, including humanitarian crises and conflicts, which at this time means investigating avenues of support for the people of Ukraine during their time of need.
As global citizens, we are hurting for our fellow man. We may feel heartbreak, loss, anger, or resentment. Whatever our faith or belief system may be, now is the time to channel our thoughts of hope and prayers to the people of Ukraine. In addition, we can stand for peace in our own lives by how we show up in the world and with those we interact with every day. Can we be just a little more patient, a little more kind, a little more considerate, and a little more loving?
I woke up this morning with the Peace Prayer of Saint Francis in my mind and heart. “Lord, make me an instrument of your peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness joy.”
Please join me and the team at Advance in standing for peace.
In solidarity,
President & CEO, Advance Community
