World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development gives us an opportunity to further our appreciation for cultural diversity and to recognize the unique role it plays in development. By actively designing public policies that integrate cultural diversity, we can begin to nurture an environment that welcomes and values all peoples. UNESCO adopted the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity in 2001 and in 2002 the UN General Assembly declared May 21 to be the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development.
At no other time in recent history has tolerance and acceptance for cultural diversity been more relevant than today. As we face this global pandemic, we are forced to acknowledge that we will not be safe until all of us are safe. This requires solutions to be implemented equitably and in a culturally sensitive manner to ensure maximum levels of acceptance.
We find ourselves at a pivotal point in history where we can not only learn from our mistakes, but also change policy to better prepare our response to future health crises. This is an opportunity to incorporate culture diversity into health, economic, and education policy to better serve all groups in any given population. We can strive towards cultural tolerance and acceptance as a society by welcoming and learning more about other cultures, even in small ways.
There are several things you can do to celebrate this day, so we invite you to learn more about the different countries we work in.
- Listen to music from another culture. El Condor Pasa, Los Calchakis (Peru)
- Watch a move that involves a country or culture other than your own. La Tonada del Viento (Bolivia)
- Have an international potluck with your family. Peri Peri Grill Chicken Recipe (Mozambique)
