From Heavy Buckets to Streams of Hope: Lightening a Grandmother’s Load

At 68, Asunción was still the one her family relied on. Her two grown daughters worked every day to support their children, so it fell to Asunción to keep the household running. That meant caring for her grandchildren, getting them to school, and walking long distances, day after day, to collect water. 

The journey was exhausting. The buckets were heavy. And the older she got, the harder each step became. 

But the physical toll was only part of the burden she bore. 

The water this devoted grandmother carried home was often unsafe. She never knew when it might make her loved ones sick. Her grandchildren missed school. Her daughters missed work. She carried that emotional weight every day, doing her best, yet still unable to protect those she loved. 

But your generosity helped lift the load from Asunción’s shoulders! 

“Now, water flows into our home as a daily treat. My grandchildren no longer miss days of school due to illness, and my daughters have more time to work and take care of the family. This change is a miracle that came just in time.”

Thanks to caring supporters like you, Advance Community and its Nicaraguan partner AVODEC were able to install a life-changing water system in Asunción’s village. Now, instead of mornings beginning with exhausting, dangerous treks through the rugged hills, Asunción simply turns on a tap, just steps from her front door, and clean, reliable water flows freely. She cooks without fear of contamination or risk of running short for the day. Her grandchildren no longer wash their hands with dirty water from faraway sources.

There is abundance instead of scarcity. There is enough water, and it is safe. The constant stress and danger that not long ago shadowed every day have lifted, all because of your compassion. 

For Asunción, clean water means health, dignity, and hope. It means rest. And it means her family can live and grow and thrive…without fear.
