She turned to her local hospital for help and was given a large syringe to use to try to extract her milk. But no matter how hard she tried, the painful process yielded nothing but tears.

The young mother was running out of options, and her tiny daughter was growing weaker.

Alejandra was left with impossible choices: feed her baby heavily diluted formula or give her “atol” (a corn milk drink), rice milk, or even sugar water. Whatever she chose, she knew it would leave her baby malnourished, or worse.
