Building Healthy Foundations: How We Teach Kids Healthy Habits That Last
One of my favorite parts of working with our youth is teaching them about health and wellness. Many kids are never taught how simple everyday choices can impact their health, so I enjoy creating opportunities for them to learn in a way that is fun, engaging, and practical. My goal is never to tell students what they should or should not do. Instead, I want to give them the tools and knowledge they need to make healthier choices for themselves.

One activity that students always enjoy is making infused water with fresh fruits. Many come into class thinking water is boring, but they are often surprised by how much they like adding flavors such as strawberries, oranges, lemons, or cucumbers. It becomes more than just a lesson about hydration. It shows them that healthy choices can be simple, enjoyable, and easy to incorporate into their daily lives.
I also love teaching students how to prepare healthy meals and snacks. Sometimes there is a perception that healthy food is expensive, difficult to make, or does not taste good. Through hands-on activities, students get to try new foods and learn simple recipes they can recreate at home. One of the best parts is seeing their reactions when they realize healthy food can actually taste great. These experiences help build confidence in the kitchen and make the lessons more memorable.
Physical activity is another important part of what we teach. We encourage students to find ways to move their bodies that they genuinely enjoy, whether that is playing sports, dancing, stretching, or simply being active with friends and family. I want students to understand that staying active does not have to feel like a chore. There are many ways to support your health while having fun at the same time.

The most rewarding part of this work is seeing students become more willing to try new things. I have watched students who were hesitant at first become excited about tasting a new fruit, making a healthy recipe, or participating in a physical activity they had never considered before. Those small moments may seem simple, but they can have a lasting impact. They show students that healthy choices are achievable and that positive changes do not have to happen all at once.
At Advance Community, we believe wellness is not about being perfect. It is about making small, positive choices every day. My hope is that the lessons students learn through our programs stay with them long after the class ends. Whether it is choosing water more often, trying a new healthy recipe, or finding an activity they enjoy, every small step matters.
Our Monthly Staff Blog Series features stories and insights from our team at Advance Community, inspired by the work they do every day.
