More Than a Mission: What Leading Advance Community Has Taught Me About Building Community
When people ask me what Advance Community does, I often talk about health, nutrition, opportunity, and access. I share stories about surgical teams changing lives in Peru, healthy food reaching families in Arizona, and community health workers helping neighbors navigate complex systems.
But the longer I serve as President and CEO, the more I realize that what we do is only part of the story.
At its heart, Advance Community is not simply a nonprofit organization. It is a community of people who believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to live a healthy, hopeful, and meaningful life. The work we accomplish is important, but the relationships we build are what make that work possible. And this has been true for us as an organization since our founding in 1970.
Leading a community-centered organization has taught me many lessons. Three stand out above the rest: trust, service, and the power of people.
Trust Is Built One Relationship at a Time
Community work begins with trust. Trust isn’t built solely through mission statements, strategic plans, or annual reports. It’s built through showing up consistently, listening carefully, and honoring commitments.

Every day, we have the privilege of working alongside donors, volunteers, healthcare professionals, community partners, and families who place their trust in us. That trust is never guaranteed. It is earned through transparency, accountability, and genuine care.
I’ve learned that trust grows when people feel seen and valued-not as transactions, but as human beings. Whether it’s a donor who has supported our mission for twenty years or a family receiving assistance for the first time, every interaction matters.
The strongest communities are built when people know they belong and know their contributions make a difference.
Service Is About Partnership, Not Charity
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that service is not something we do for people; it’s something we do with people. Too often, nonprofits can unintentionally focus on being providers rather than partners. At Advance Community, we strive to listen first and respond second. The people closest to the challenges are often closest to the solutions.
I’ve watched volunteers become advocates. I’ve seen participants become leaders in their communities. I’ve witnessed donors becoming mentors, connectors, and champions for change.
Service is most powerful when it honors the dignity, strengths, and aspirations of every person involved. It reminds us that we are all interconnected. We all have something to give, and we all have moments when we need support.
The Real Impact Comes from People

When I reflect on our organization’s accomplishments, my mind doesn’t immediately go to numbers, statistics, or reports. I think about people. I think about the child who can now walk because of a life-changing orthopedic surgical procedure. I think about the senior who no longer has to choose between paying a utility bill and purchasing healthy food. I think about the volunteer who discovered a deeper sense of purpose through service. I think about the donor who shares that supporting Advance Community has become one of the most meaningful parts of their life.
These are the moments that remind me why our work matters. Behind every program, every initiative, and every success story are people who care deeply about one another. They are the true heart of Advance Community. This was never clearer to me than when over 400 community members and leaders gathered with us on May 6th to celebrate our Pa’ Adelante initiative and learn about how we serve their community.
Building Community Is Ongoing Work
Community isn’t something we create once and then maintain. It is something we build every day. It requires listening when it’s easier to speak. It requires collaboration when it’s easier to work alone. It requires patience, humility, and a willingness to learn.
As leaders, we often feel pressure to have all the answers. What I’ve learned is that leadership is less about having answers and more about creating space for others to contribute their gifts and perspectives.
The strongest communities are not built around a single leader. They are built through shared purpose, mutual respect, and a collective commitment to something larger than ourselves.
Looking Ahead
As Advance Community continues to grow and evolve, I remain inspired by the people who make this work possible. I am grateful for every volunteer who gives their time, every donor who invests in our mission, every partner who walks alongside us, and every individual who trusts us to be part of their journey.
Leading Advance Community has taught me that our greatest impact is not measured solely by the programs we deliver. It is measured by the connections we create, the trust we nurture, and the communities we strengthen together.
Because in the end, this work has always been about more than a mission. It’s about people. And when people come together with compassion, hope, and purpose, extraordinary things become possible.
