Strengthening Communities: Eight Years of Partnership with NGUNI in Mozambique

girl sticks

For the past eight years, Advance has been dedicated to building thriving, sustainable communities and improving the health of individuals and families in Mozambique. Our partnership with NGUNI, a local NGO, has been central to these efforts, especially in the small village of Maciene in the Gaza Province. This collaboration has brought transformative change to one of the poorest regions in the country, addressing critical health issues such as malnutrition, malaria, diarrheal diseases, and the highest prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Mozambique!

Our partnership focuses on three primary areas: food security, health education, and primary and secondary education. Through innovative programs in animal husbandry and sustainable agriculture, NGUNI has been instrumental in supporting individual households to increase their crop yield, diversify their crops, decrease pests, and manage the effects of climate change. Cooking demonstrations and the guidance of agriculture technicians have empowered families to improve their food security, leading to healthier, more resilient communities.

Health education is another cornerstone of our partnership. The Circles of Conversation initiative engages the community in vital discussions on general health topics and provides crucial support for individuals living with HIV/AIDS. These support groups offer more than just medication; they provide access to food and financial assistance for transportation to clinics, ensuring that everyone can lead a healthier life.

Education is the foundation of a brighter future, and our after-school program in Maciene is making a significant impact! Initially designed as homework support, this program has evolved into an intensive remediation effort, especially critical in the pandemic’s aftermath. With three dedicated professors working with 128 students from 1st to 12th grade, we are helping to bridge educational gaps and foster a generation of informed, empowered young people!

Our partnership with NGUNI exemplifies the power of collaboration in driving meaningful, lasting change. As we look to the future, we remain committed to working hand-in-hand with our local partners to create sustainable, healthy, and educated communities in Mozambique. Together, we are making a difference, one step at a time.

Thank you for your continued support in our efforts to create thriving communities!
