When we met Margarida, a single mother raising four children in rural Mozambique, it was clear she needed help. Her family was working tirelessly to grow food the best way they knew how, but each harvest barely produced enough to stave off starvation, leaving little to nothing leftover to take to market.
As a result, they couldn’t afford basic staples like oil, salt, and sugar for cooking. The school supplies her children needed were an unaffordable luxury. Even the soap they needed to bathe and wash clothes was out of reach.
And so it would have stayed. But then the love of Esperança’s donors stepped in to turn things around for this hardworking family. For as little as $13 per person, this support supplied Margarida with new seeds that promised to not only grow abundantly, but also fetch a good price at market. Those gifts also gave her family the knowhow to care for these vegetables, taught them how and when to plant, what to feed them and the best techniques to produce a bountiful harvest.
Now, one year later, this little family is amazed at what they’ve accomplished with your help. Not only do they have a wide variety of nutritious vegetables to keep them fed – lettuce, cabbage, onion, garlic and more – they had more than enough to sell at market, providing funds they’ve needed for so long.
“Because of the seeds they provided and what they taught us, we planted everything correctly and produced enough to eat and sell for the first time in a long time… thank you!,” says Margarida with a grateful smile. “But we have neighbors who also need this help. I ask Esperança to continue to support families like ours so that we can all care for and feed our children.”
